The minimalist will design his or her kitchen considering only the intended function of a kitchen: to prepare and serve meals. Said kitchens are designed only to store the tools necessary to such function. The minimalist will rue the day he shelved consideration of extra storage space.
If you your kitchen is big enough, an island is fabulous to have. Islands serve many functions. You can prepare food on it, and it is especially convenient if your stove is in the island itself. If the island is big enough, you can eat at it too. A seating island is a great place for guests to get a chance to talk with the cook while he or she is preparing the mail and of course, an island will give you more cupboard space, something that is always at a premium in any kitchen!
In the modern time kitchens have moved up from being just another room, to almost the main room of the house, and the heart of the family activity space, any thought and energy you put into a better kitchen design will pay itself back in months and years of have a great central place to enjoy family dinners and simple coffee talk quality time.
