A kitchen is unlike any other room in the house. While other rooms change to reflect changes in lifestyle - new couch, new lamps, new curtains -- the kitchen grows with its owner, changes little, and brings a history with it. While I started out thirty years ago with a set of borrowed pots and pans and a mismatched set of yard sale cutlery, I have accumulated so much more, both voluntarily and by accident.
The traffic flow in and around your kitchen is one of the most important aspects of designing a kitchen and something that should be carefully thought out. Taking the time up front to visualize this is well worth it as you will have to live with the consequences for the life of your kitchen.
Lighting must also match the size of the room. Many people make the mistake of not taking this into consideration. For large kitchens, larger lighting items are needed, like big chandeliers. They need to spread their warmth to every corner of the room.
